Story by: Dennis Hughes High School Varsity Football VS Trenton Kendrell Carter rumbled for 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as Brookfield opened its varsity football season with a 35-14 thumping of home-standing Trenton. Trenton had momentum early, holding the Bulldogs to a three-and-out opening drive. A long run ended with Trenton at the Brookfield 11, but Trenton didn't gain another inch, as the 'Dogs' defense stonewalled Trenton on three straight runs. An incomplete pass turned the ball over to Brookfield. The Bulldogs marched to the Trenton 27, where an untimely fumble turned the ball back over. However, the defense once again stood strong, and the Bulldogs took advantage of a bad punt snap, regaining the football at Trenton's 23. Trayce Switzer scored two plays later on a 19-yard option run. Siope Pulu's pass to Peyton Parn gave the 'Dogs an 8-0 lead and a boost of energy, propelling the Bulldogs to a 29-point second quarter. Trenton was held to a three-and-out, and Pulu stormed untouched to block the punt, recovered by Kameron Perry at the Trenton 13. Carter scored on a five-yard burst, and the 'Dogs were up, 14-0. "The boys played really well in the first half and took care of business," Coach Luke said. That, they did. The Bulldogs "D" held once again, and Switzer struck quickly with a 40-yard catch-and-run TD to Parn down the right sideline. Pulu, who also plays rugby, drop-kicked the PAT for a 21-0 lead. Trenton answered with a 50-yard option run, but the Bulldogs responded with an 86-yard passing play. Switzer hit Perry in full stride in the middle of the field, as he raced untouched to the end zone and a 29-6 'Dogs' halftime advantage. Trenton scored on an 80-yard kickoff return, following Carter's second TD run, in the second half, but the game had been all but decided in the opening 24 minutes, particularly by the Bulldogs' defense, led by Makky Kerns, Devan Parn, Deven Norman, Ross Ehrich, Cooper Holland, Lucky Poston and Peyton Parn, who had an interception. They repeatedly stuffed Trenton's running game and allowed little time for Trenton to pass. Switzer finished with 188 yards and two TDs on 9-of-16 passing and added 21 yards rushing and a score. Perry had 104 receiving yards on five catches to go along with his TD, while Coldon Parrent gained 72 yards on just seven totes. Pulu had two catches for 25 yards, and Carter caught a ball for 19 yards. The Bulldogs (1-0) welcome Maysville (0-1), who lost its opener to Gallatin, 30-27, in Friday's home-opener.
