Brookfield ended 2024 on a sour note, as both varsity basketball teams fell in Holiday Hoops action. The Bulldogs lost to Chillicothe, 53-23, while the Lady Dogs dropped a 56-36 decision to Lathrop.
Chillicothe jumped to a 14-3 first-quarter lead in the boys contest and gradually pulled away, as the Bulldogs failed to score more than seven points in any period. Hayden DeJong led the Dogs with 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal, and Brayden Shoop (9 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Riley Hinckle (2 rebounds, 2 blocks) each scored three points. Kendrell Carter (3 rebounds, assist, block), Phoenix Jordan, and Bryson Shoop (2 steals, assist, rebound) scored two points apiece for the Bulldogs (2-8). Fueled by a 22-5 second quarter, Lathrop cruised to victory in the girls game. Gracyn Beckman (3 rebounds, 2 steals, assist) scored a team-high 12 points, and Sam Sharp collected seven points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Lady Dogs. Two-time defending state champion Jayden Keller and Mya Sackrey won individual titles, leading Brookfield to the team championship at the Battle of the Katy Trail girls wrestling tournament.
Keller won the 110-pound division with three straight pins and a 12-3 major decision in the final. Sackrey (4 pins, technical fall) won by fall in the 155 final for the Lady Dogs, who outpointed runner-up Kearney by 17.5 points for the team crown with 284.5 points. Hadlye Sackrey: 125 (4 pins), Riley Howell: 140 (2 pins, medical forfeit) and Lilly Lindsay: 145 (2 pins, medical forfeit) each placed second, and Raylee King: 105 (2 pins) was 4th. Kaecen Brown: 130 (2 pins, 2 major decisions) was 7th; Aubrey Wilson: 235 (2 pins) was 8th; and Makenna Munsterman: 190 (pin) was 12th. 2023 state champ Devan Parn captured the 190 title with five consecutive pins and a 10-2 major decision for the Dogs, who placed 5th in the team competition with 331.5 points - .5 behind Marceline. Ryder Techau (4 pins, 2 decisions) took the bronze at 132 with a 6-5 decision, and Kameron Perry (5 pins, decision) was also third at 150, winning by fall. Gray scored seven points in the deciding 4th quarter, as Brookfield rallied from a four-point deficit, outpointing the Cardinals, 18-10. The Bulldogs had earlier wiped away a seven-point Cards' lead in the 2nd period, knotting the game at 21-21 at the half. Alex Bennett scored 10 points, and Brock McLaury added seven points.
