Auto Mechanics

Building Trades I

Students will be trained in the use and care of tools and tool identification.  Classroom training will be supplemented by actual on-site work experience in the many areas of construction.

I. Students will demonstrate and apply appropriate safety practices in the shop and on the job site.
  • Students will demonstrate proper attire in shop and on job site.
  • Students will demonstrate safe operations of all power tools.
  • Students will demonstrate proper clean-up of shop and job site.
  • Students will demonstrate proper usage of safety glasses.
II. All students will demonstrate understanding of the elements of construction planning (blueprints, symbols, measurements, elevations, scales, estimation, etc).
  • Students will identify blueprint symbols.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge in reading blueprint elevations and details.
  • Students will estimate material needed using the blueprints.
  • Students will read dimensions of rooms off of blueprints.
III. All students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic terminology and application of concrete as a building material.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic vocabulary associated with concrete.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the proper sequence of finishing concrete.
  • Student will demonstrate knowledge of the importance of concrete in construction.
IV. All students will demonstrate the knowledge of procedures for the installation of a structure's sub-floor.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic vocabulary associated with flooring systems.
  • Students will demonstrate the proper sequence for installing floor systems.
  • Students will demonstrate how to properly square the sub-floor.
  • Students will demonstrate the proper nailing pattern on the sub-floor.
V. All students will know the basic hand and power tools, including correct usage of each.
  • Students will be able to recognize power tools and hand tools.
  • Students will demonstrate how to use each tool safely and efficiently.
  • Students will show how to properly clean and maintain each tool.
VI. All students will be able to construct wall systems and roof systems to industry standards.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the main vocabulary associated with wall and roof systems.
  • Students will properly nail components of wall systems.
  • Students will plumb and square all walls.
  • Students will describe the difference between rafters and trusses.
  • Students will describe the two most popular spacings of roof and wall systems.
  • Students will demonstrate how to install trusses.
VII. All students will demonstrate knowledge in the installation of exterior and interior finishes.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of the basic terminology associated with exterior and interior finishes.
  • Students will properly calculate and install siding and roofing.
  • Students will finish drywall and paint interior walls.
  • Students will install interior trim appropriately.
VIII. All students will perform basic electrical and plumbing procedures according to local building codes.
  • Students will describe the difference between different types of wires.
  • Students will demonstrate the proper installation of electrical boxes and lighting fixtures.
  • Students will demonstrate how to wire a receptacle and switch.
  • Students will define the importance of building codes for electrical and plumbing.
  • Students will describe the difference between copper and pex waterlines.
  • Students will describe the basic function of waste lines.
IX. All students will consistently demonstrate professional soft skills necessary to keep employment.
  • Students will describe the importance of timelines and attendance when in the work force and demonstrate it on thejob site.
  • Students will demonstrate respect for superiors while on the job.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to work with others efficiently.

Building Trades II

This course continues building on the skills learned in Building Trades I.  Students will receive additional reinforcement of safety training, blueprint reading, electrical and plumbing rough-ins, exterior and interior finishing, mechanical trades, energy conservation, and pre-employment preparation.

I. All students will be able to differentiate between safe and unsafe working conditions and will demonstrate safe practices in the shop and on the job site.
  • All students will demonstrate proper attire in shop and on job site.
  • All students will demonstrate safe operations of all power tools.
  • All students will demonstrate proper clean-up of shop and job site.
  • All students will model proper usage of safety glasses.
  • All students will differentiate between safe and unsafe conditions.
II. All students will demonstrate understanding of blueprints and will accurately estimate materials for a structure.
  • All students will identify blueprint symbols.
  • All students will demonstrate knowledge in reading of blueprint elevations and details.
  • All students will estimate material for an entire project based on provided blueprints.
  • All students will layout an entire project using the provided blueprints.
III. All students will demonstrate an understanding for the basic terminology and the application of concrete as a building material.
  • All students will define basic vocabulary associated with concrete.
  • All students will describe the proper sequence of finishing concrete.
  • All students will explain the importance of concrete in construction.
  • All students will properly lay out footing forms and wall forms as per the plans.
  • All students will demonstrate the ability to finish concrete flatwork.
IV. All students will construct a sub-floor system efficiently with square measurements.
  • All students will lay out floor joists according to plans.
  • All students will accurately cut and install floor joists.
  • All students will properly install decking on the floor joist including proper gluing and nailing.
V. All students will construct all exterior and interior walls to measurements specified in blueprints with regard for local building codes.
  • All students will lay out all exterior and interior walls with all components including studs, corners, windows, and doors.
  • All students will accurately nail all components of walls.
  • All students will plumb and square walls.
  • All students will correctly attach all walls together.
VI. All students will properly install exterior and interior finishes according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • All students will define basic terminology associated with exterior and interior finishes.
  • All students will demonstrate how to properly calculate and install siding and roofing.
  • All students will demonstrate how to finish drywall and paint interior walls.
  • All students will explain where interior trim is used.
VII. All students will completely wire a house according to local building codes including 3-way switches, receptacles, and breaker boxes.
  • All students will identify which wire is used for each specific task.
  • All students will demonstrate the ability to install boxes and wire neatly according to local code.
  • All students will wire all receptacles and switches with little or no assistance from instructor or books.
  • All students will identify the main components of a breader box and describe how to properly wire it.
VIII. All students will consistently demonstrate professional soft skills necessary to keep employment.
  • All students will describe the importance of timeliness and attendance when in the work force.
  • All students will demonstrate respect for superiors while on the job.
  • All students will work with others efficiently.
IX. All students will demonstrate knowledge in the writing of resumes and the interview process.
  • All students will construct a resume based on their work and school history.
  • All student will practice filling out a job application.
  • All students will demonstrate the ability to conduct themselves professionally during a job interview.
