Graphic Arts I/II
Course Description
This is an introductory course designed to prepare students for employment in a career area involving graphic arts skills. This course follows industry standards for professional layout and design in the world of publishing using Adobe CC software. Students learn the basics of how to create professional looking pieces in a creative graphic design atmosphere.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
Entering the Classroom - Upon quietly entering the classroom, students will need to place cell phones in the basket on the counter. THEN, login to a computer to begin work as assigned.
Exiting the Classroom - You are required to clean up your workstation prior to leaving the classroom (return books, straighten keyboard, pickup trash, push in your chair). If you must leave the classroom in another event, you will need to sign out using the HS Google Form. Senseless roaming is forbidden.
Equipment - Be respectful of all equipment cameras, computers, etc. Students will be required to sign an equipment checkout/liability agreement before allowed access to equipment. All equipment must be signed out on the equipment log.
Homework Policy - The school’s homework policy will be followed. Assignments turned in on time will be eligible for 100 percent; assignments one class period late will receive an automatic 25 percent deduction. Assignments turned in more than one class period late will be marked zero.
Cubbies - Each student will be assigned a cubby. Students must utilize cubbies for storage purposes (artbox, portfolios, projects, books)
Attendance Policy - (based on essential elements professionalism and work ethic.) Just as you would in the workplace, students are be required to call or email the instructor at least 1 hour prior to their absence. If they fail to make contact, students lose points for the day and will not be allowed to makeup work. If students make notification, they are allowed to retain points and makeup work. YOUR PARENTS CANNOT DO IT FOR YOU. As always, parents will need to notify the office of your absence as they normally would in the morning,

This is a professional environment. Students are expected to behave in a professional manner while in this classroom. All rules and procedures must be followed in order to create an effective, fun learning environment. Many times students will be expected to work independently, managing time to meet due dates. I expect student’s best effort. Projects may be revised multiple times to generate the desired outcome expected by the teacher.

- Understand typography concepts
- Perform publication setup
- Create and manipulate digital images
- Review design business skills
- Demonstrate leadership in the classroom and industry settings.
- Perform printing and other output processes
- Plastic “art” bin
- Art 1st Sketch Pad, 50 sheets, 9x12
- Sharpie Ultra fine marker
- Large eraser (or I prefer white vinyl eraser)
- Black portfolio (8.5” x 11” minimum size)
- Drawing pencils
- Color pencils or fine point colored markers (or both)
- Flash Drive
- EarBuds or headphones
- Class Fee - $20 for required SkillsUSA membership
- Leadership and workplace skills - 20 percent
- Students will receive a weekly leadership/Workplace grade based on but not included to the elements below.
- Integrity, work ethic, professionalism, responsibility, adaptability/flexibility, self motivation, decision making, communication, teamwork, multicultural sensitivity and awareness, planning-organizing-management, leadership
- Students will receive a weekly leadership/Workplace grade based on but not included to the elements below.
- Technical skills - 80 percent
- 60 percent exams and projects
- 20 percent tutorials and notes

Classroom Rules
- If you would like to keep your privilege of sitting in a chair, please do NOT roll around the classroom in it.
- Stay on tasks. Do not use equipment for personal use or entertainment.
- NO PHONES OR COMPUTER GAMES
- Classroom printers will only be utilized for Graphic Arts assignments.
- Food and drinks are permitted, but not around the computers/projects.
